Adopt-a-Park/Trail Program

1. Ventura County Parks will ensure that the proposed project locations are appropriate for the age, experience
and safety of the participants. Certain trail segments may not be appropriate for volunteers due to traffic
volume, steep slopes, poor visibility, or other reasons. Those segments not appropriate for volunteers may be
suitable for entry by professional contractors. The Coordinator will negotiate the location and scope of each
project with the participant.

2. The Sponsor/Permittee will attend a safety session given by the Department and ensure that permittee
conducts same safety session for all participants prior to performance of duties. Ensure that safety
instructions are provided to all participants. Orientation shall include a discussion and explanation of the
safety requirements and procedures.

3. One (1) adult supervisor shall be assigned for each five (5) minors.

4. The County of Ventura, their officers and employees shall not be liable for any death, injury or property
damage claims which arise from any cause that might have been prevented by the permittee or those persons
employed by or acting on behalf of the permittee. If any claim arises out of the foregoing, the permittee shall
defend, indemnify, and hold harmless, the County of Ventura, their officers and employees from same.

5. Sponsors are to be considered volunteers and not officers, employees, or agents of Ventura County Parks. Any
injuries, claims, liabilities, suits or costs relating to this permit shall be the sole responsibility of the sponsors.

6. Participants in the group agree to obey and abide by all laws and regulations relating to safety and such terms
and conditions as may be required by the Ventura County Parks Department for special conditions that may
exist on a particular adopted trail segment.

7. The purpose of the Adopt-A-Trail Program is to foster volunteerism that reduces Department costs for trail
maintenance. It is not intended to provide an advertising medium. Courtesy signs are intended only to
recognize the contribution of the volunteer and such recognition will be strictly limited to the volunteer’s name
and/insignia and no products will be identified.

8. Trail segments are assigned on a first come, first served basis to provide an opportunity for all to participate.
Waiting lists shall be established for segments with interest by more than one party, and the next party on the
list advances to the top upon termination of the permit by the current permittee.

9. The term of the permit is not limited but shall be for a minimum of two years. It may be renewed as often as
desired by the permittee as long as the terms of the permit are followed except as provided in section 10.

10. No one individual, organization or corporation will be allowed to hold a trail segment for more than two years if
there is a waiting list for this segment.

11. Permittee may not assign his/her permit to another individual, organization or corporation prior to or at the
expiration date of the permit. Succession to the rights to segments will be by waiting lists only.

12. Cash contributions should be made by hiring a contractor to do the work under permit, except as provided in
section 13. Signs will be provided on the same basis as for volunteer labor. The Department and/or
Coordinator may facilitate the arrangement between the sponsor and the contractor.

13. Arrangements may be made for the cash adoption of a trail segment. The Department and/or Coordinator
will determine the cost and may provide a courtesy sign to accompany the crew while working.

14. Wildflower and tree planting project approval will be at the discretion of the Department. The
Department will determine appropriate project locations, spacing, and signs consistent with other
adopted segments and landscape features.
